The Knik Valley is Incredibly Photogenic
The Knik Valley is one of the most beautiful valleys in all of Alaska. Accessed best by flight or ATV, this valley offers incredible views of the Chugach Mountains, the impressive Knik River, and up close views of the Knik Glacier. Take in all the views that you can and bring your camera along to capture it all!
You may see wildlife on your tour such as Moose, Dall Sheep, and Bald Eagles. Planes and helicopters soar overhead and you never know what else you may find out on the trail. There’s plenty of photo opportunities during your ride and at the vistas where we stop for snack breaks.
Pack your camera and get ready to photograph all of the beautiful views!
Tips for Capturing Your Adventure
Have Your Phone in an Easy to Reach Pocket
Your phone is a great option for capturing the beauty as we ride! Passengers are free to take photos and videos as we ride through the valley. Drivers should keep those hands on the wheel and are not permitted to use cameras while driving! We make plenty of stops along the way so that you can take selfies and have your guide take group photos of you too.
Your guide will also take fun phone photos and videos of you as we ride down the trail!
Pack Your Wide Lens
Big cameras, like DSLR or mirrorless, can capture all the action. You’ll be glad to have the camera along so you can create some beautiful photographs to remember your trip by.
Wide lenses are best for capturing all the unique landscapes. A 24mm to 50mm is a great option for capturing the mountains and rivers, especially as you ride. Play with motion blur for the machines in front of or behind you, and quicken that shutter speed so you can capture any wildlife you may see. You should pack your long lens too in case we spot a Moose or plane off in the distance!
We recommend packing a camera strap so you don’t lose your camera as we ride along the trail. A cleaning cloth is always a great idea in case your glass gets some rain or silt on it!
Get a GoPro for Your Helmet
Bring a GoPro along to remember your whole experience or film the clips during high adventure. We can attach your GoPro to your helmet to give you that POV view as you ride through the trees and splash through creeks. Give your friends back at home a taste of what riding in Alaska is like!
Bring a Bag to Keep Your Gear Safe
Bring a backpack to put your cameras and extra batteries in. A bag that is waterproof, like a dry bag, would be best for keeping your gear safe as we splash through creeks. Keep in mind that the trail is fairly rugged, dusty, and splashy. You’ll want to keep your gear protected while riding so you can enjoy capturing your entire trip to Alaska.
Your camera can easily get silty and dusty as we ride so keep that in mind!
Flying Your Drone
If the weather allows for flying you can bring a drone along to capture the landscape during our stops. The Knik Valley is a busy airspace, so you must have your Part 107 certificate, have your drone registered with the FAA, get the go ahead from your guide, and have a spotter while flying. You can find the full FAA regulations here and you should review them if you plan to bring your drone to Alaska.
Please note that flying your drone is not always possible and will really come down to the weather and your guides preference!
What Not to Pack
We do not allow riding with a selfie stick or 360 camera stick extending from the vehicle. It would be easy to lose it to a tree or brush as we drive along the trail – and you wouldn’t want your phone to fall in a creek!
You can bring those types of cameras along to capture the beauty when we stop.
Wondering what else you should pack? Check out our guide for what to bring along on your ATV tour!
Get Your Camera Ready & Explore
Your ride is going to give you some incredible views no matter the weather! Be sure to charge up your phone so you can capture it all.
Pack your favorite cameras and gear for the elements, grab some layers and snacks, and get ready to witness the magic of the Knik River Valley.
