Petersville and the Foothills of Denali

An old mining district of the early 1900’s, the Peterville recreational mining area is on the southern and more scenic edge of the Denali National Park. Life-long Alaskans call this the “real road to Denali.” The views are amazing, the terrain is diverse, there’s an abundance of wildlife, and there is a massive network of groomed trails connecting huge frozen swamps covered in powder to explore and play in.

Trailheads start along the Parks Highway at Trapper Creek (mile 115) and continue roughly every other mile up to milepost 131. All of these trails run east west stretching approximately 15- 25 miles out to the main Petersville Road trailhead at Kroto Creek. This sledder’s paradise has every type of riding condition and terrain. From big, open, state-maintained trails to powder covered mountains and meadows. You can ride through historic mining ruins and past active claims still producing gold all while viewing Denali, North America’s tallest mountain, and the beautiful south face of the Alaska Range which stretches for hundreds of miles.

Whether you're an experienced thrill-seeker looking for deep powder and slopes, or an adventuresome family group, the Petersville area will deliver. The vast trail system here allows us to cater the experience to you and your current snowmobiling skill level.

If you’re coming to Alaska in the winter, it is incredibly important to be prepared! Temperatures can get below zero so you must dress warm. Warm winter coat, snow bibs, gloves, beanie and winter boots are required. It is best to wear multiple thick layers underneath (please call to discuss layering if you are unfamiliar with dressing for negative temperatures). Helmets and goggles will be provided but feel free to bring your own.

When scheduling, please let us know and allow additional time if you need to make a flight or other connection. We will be traveling far away from civilization. The exact return time is dependent on trail conditions. The trailhead is approximately 2.5 hours North of Anchorage, near Trapper Creek.
